How to Keep Your Vehicle Wrap Looking Its Best
A vehicle wrap is one of the most cost-effective forms of advertising your business can invest in — but like any investment, it rewards a little care. Follow these guidelines to get the most life out of your wrap.
Wash It Regularly
Don't let dirt and contaminants sit on the surface longer than necessary — the longer they stay, the harder they are to remove. Start by rinsing off loose dirt and grit with a spray of water before you touch the surface at all. Then wash with a wet, non-abrasive soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a clean microfiber cloth to avoid water spots. Avoid wax and wax-based coatings — they are not recommended for vinyl graphics.
Car Washes: Touchless Is Best
Your wrap can go through a car wash, but touchless is the safer choice. Brush-style car washes can dull, scratch, or lift the edges of the film over time depending on brush quality and how frequently you use them.
Pressure Washing
Hand washing is always preferred, but pressure washing is fine if you follow a few rules. Keep pressure below 2,000 psi and water temperature below 180°F. Use a 40-degree wide-angle spray nozzle and keep it at least one foot away from the surface, held straight on at 90 degrees. Angling the nozzle toward an edge can lift the film.
Dealing With Tough Contaminants
Bug splatter, bird droppings, and tree sap can damage a wrap if left too long. Soak the area with very hot soapy water for several minutes to soften the contaminant before attempting to remove it. If that isn't enough, products like Meguiar's Gold Class Bug and Tar Remover or a solution of isopropyl alcohol and water (2:1 ratio) can help. Always test any product in a hidden area first, and never use abrasive scrubbers.
Fuel Spills
Wipe fuel off immediately — gasoline degrades vinyl and the adhesive underneath. Follow up with a full wash as soon as possible.
Store Out of the Sun When You Can
UV exposure and atmospheric pollutants degrade vinyl just like they degrade paint, especially on horizontal surfaces like the hood and roof. Park in a garage or shaded area when possible. If you notice your wrap beginning to discolor, have it addressed quickly to avoid staining the paint underneath.
